Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry has been shown for being effective in maintaining health and also helping you get through a cold or flu.   (See link at the bottom of the page for more information.)

You can buy elderberry syrup and lozenges at most health food stores, but may want to make your own.

3.5 cups cold water
2 cups dried elderberries
1 Tbsp fresh or dried ginger root
1 tsp cinnamon powder or 1 cinnamon stick
1 cup raw honey

Directions:

1.  Pour water in a saucepan and add elderberries, ginger and cinnamon
2.  Bring to a boil
3.  Reduce heat and simmer covered for 40-45 minutes or until the liquid has reduced by half.
4.  Remove from heat and mash the berries.
5.  Pour through a strainer or cheesecloth into a glass bowl.  If you use a cheesecloth, make sure to squeeze out the juice.  (Realize the berries are going to stain your cheesecloth.)
6.  Add honey and stir until well combined.
7.  Bottle final product in a sterilized glass container.

Dosage:
Adult:  1 Tbsp a day for maintenance.   When sick, 1 Tbsp 3 times a day
Children:  Half of an adult dose.
